Question:

  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – One interesting aspect of the last Kerry-Bush debate was his response on the gay issue. Now I happen to think, that in least in terms of the big picture issues, there is little to choose between Kerry and Bush. They think much the same thing about most everything. I don’t think there has yet been a debate in which Kerry has not used the phrase "the President and I agree on …" or words to that effect. In one of the debates he used variations of that phrase three times. But on the gay issue, there does seem to be a difference, and I’m wondering if Kerry’s view represents the liberal consensus in America. Kerry implied that Cheney’s daughter had no choice about being a lesbian, whereas Bush says he’s not sure whether it’s a choice or not. Curiously for me, I think I’d have given Bush’s answer, rather than Kerry’s. I don’t think it’s at all clear why some people are sexually oriented to people of their own gender. To the best of my knowledge there are no studies that clearly show a "gay chromosome"

Well just today it has become clear that there is a chromosome that causes gays. The research concentrating on why and how gay people still exist as it seems fairly clear under the normal scheme of things same sex people would reduce brcause of no offspring, and should by now have disappeared or be of a very small number? But the research indicates that the gene is connected with fecundity and families of gay people , apparently the straight members, have the same gene which is the cause of the increased fecundity. or that can analyse – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – environment in such a way as to reliably predict homosexual orientation. And so, on empirical grounds, what other answer can one give but that one is not sure? For me, that doesn’t justify discrimination in any sphere of human activity. Whether it’s a lifestyle choice or predicted by genes or any combination of free will or predisposition is surely irrelevant. In my view, what consenting adults choose to do sexually is simply no business of the state, and attempts to vary legal protections according to gender, or to mitigate a person’s claims or rights on the basis of sexual orientation are indefencible. If gay people want to get married, I say, let them do so. Ironically, gays may turn out to be one of the last bastions of marriage. Now I can understand why the notion that gays have no choice in the matter appeals to those who oppose discrimination. Plainly, if it’s like skin colour or ethnicity or genetic disability, then programs to "cure" it are doomed to failure and will inflict pain without good purpose. Fears about young people being turned gay by adult gays would be groundless. Discriminating against people in areas for which they aren’t accountable seems clearly wrong. On the other hand, it does make homosexuality seem a little like a disease. Perhaps, eventually, if one can isolate the gay gene, one can modify the sexuality of gays. If it’s environmental, perhaps people can sue those responsible for (unwittingly) turning them gay. Public policies against "those damn culottes" might have to be instituted. In the end, gays might come to be bracketed closely with disabled and HIV positive people — seen as victims who ought to prefer a cure. I rather suspect that nobody is purely heterosexual. After all, what is a homosexual anyway? It is someone who aims to engage in sexual contact with persons of their own gender. There is ample evidence that many men who are married with children also engage in a range of sexual practices with other men, while asserting that they are heterosexual. In prison, many men satisfy themselves in ways that they would publicly declaim on the outside. In the end, in my opinion, we aren’t oriented to genders, but to people and circumstances. It may well be that a given man or woman may never find him- or herself in a situation in which a same-sex experience seems indicated. That person may believe he or she is heterosxual and in practice, he or she will be so defined. But if they do find themselves in that situation and decide to go ahead, does that mean that, retrospectively, they were gay or bisexual? I think such definitions are pointless. Speaking for myself, I cannot imagine any set of circumstances in which I would find sex with another male appealing. But not being able to imagine such circumstances, and there being no such circumstances are not at all the same thing. Perhaps if people just stopped worrying about who people were oriented to and left people to try floating their boats down whatever river seemed inviting at the time there would be a lot less rubbish being talked. I know that’s not Bush’s position of course, but that doesn’t mean Kerry is right either. I think it speaks volumes about the US polity that even on this matter, neither side is willing to unconditionally endorse the full sexual rights of gay people, and those that wink at them have to find an entirely spurious basis for doing so. The Nerk

As far as I am aware the gays do not want amrriage so much as a recognition of their relationships in some legal manner. And although I agree that it is not a marriage because children will not occur. Their should be some sort of legal arrangement for the following reasons. It becomes clear that it is a requirement as we all know only relatives can visit in hospitals, and if a gay couple have an accident the partner might be stopped from even comforting their partner because of being unable to produce any legal attachment? And I can understand that some legal recogition of the relationship so that if one dies, the money and/or property wont go to an underserving aunt, brother or parent leaving the partner destitute?

Pointers ? I somehow doubt this… and I support Gay marriage. I have seen conclusive work on Brain differences, but it remained a "chicken or egg" argument…. it may well be hormonal, which may even be environmentally related, we aren’t sure. Gay marriage reduces promiscuity, thus transmission of STD’s are inhibited… In addition, Marriage forces one to develop a deeper sense of relationship…. and work on things, rather than turn and run. Another good thing…. The problem with Gay marriage is the inheritance rights, and a couple other issue’s… most of which are about the children. Children are our future. Most of our laws surrounding marriage are there to facilitate the lives of our children. A Society can know no greater calling… And , it is a phony straw man to assume that a gay marriage would not produce a better role model for children.. it would. If the parent was gay, that isn’t going to change. It is better the child learns the value of fidelity, and sticking together through thick and thin, rather than a rotating "other half" on a daily basis. The child will emulate role model behavior, as far as promiscuity goes… but, choice of gender appears to be determined by something other than role. But, another concern regarding children is the passing of the money… As it stands today, Uncle "Ernie", passes on, and the estate passes back to the family, who in straw man theory, is reproducing… Thus, lack of marriage among gays, facilitates our children. Thus, I suspect, the position among the Kerry group. They support Unions being recognized, but they don’t want it to be a legal marriage. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – or that can analyse environment in such a way as to reliably predict homosexual orientation.
Response:

Well just today it has become clear that there is a chromosome that causes gays. Wow, "just today", eh? How exciting!

Would be for you, sounds like you have trouble knowing what day it is, nevermind what is going on. But I can back whatever I say with factual reports. Oh I might add just today is the first acquaitance I have had that there is even discussion about a gay gene. http://www.newscientist.com/news/print.jsp?id=ns99996519 Not being gay, or the near gay that cant get their minds of it, I dont give a stuff one way or the other. Just dont care how others satisfy their sexual cravings, just dont like to see persecution and condemnation for practices as long as they are not as perverted as the West family in England, or legal torture chambers in countries like Israel that like to claim similiarities with our western democracies. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – But the research indicates that the gene is connected with fecundity and families of gay people , apparently the straight members, have the same gene which is the cause of the increased fecundity. Wow! A gene that makes some people gay and makes others breed a lot, eh? Wow! this kind of "knowledge" sounds like it is right up there with the "bible code" and other great intellectual achievements of that sort. As far as I am aware the gays do not want amrriage so much as a recognition of their relationships in some legal manner. Then why do they insist they want "marriage"?

Poor fella, trying hard but way out of his depth. Wants to get back to the brainwashing, but entertaining , simpsons etc. The religious want to stop any kind of relationship so compare it with marriage. In Australia they have full recognition of their perverted partnerships, but they *still* want to play at husband and wife.

As I understand in Australia the partnership does not address the matters below. So I know it’s straining your attention span, but check it out. You don’t need to turn "marriage" in a circus to do that.

You’re not to bright are you, yes marriage gives heterosexual partners all those things in one hit, so as I understand it partnerships and complex arrangements have to be made to ensure the same rights for gay couples. And I would lie to see that so that the matter is taken out of the political arena, where matters of class induced funding, illegal wars, HTA agreements, PBS can no longer be submerged by what gays are doing.

Response:

And although I agree that it is not a marriage because children will not occur.

So in relationships between men & women where 1 of them has a problem so that they cannot birth children. They shouldnt’ be allowed to get married eithert?

Response:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well just today it has become clear that there is a chromosome that causes gays. Wow, "just today", eh? How exciting!
Yeah. I concur, as I have not read this, as of yet. As far as I am aware the gays do not want amrriage so much as a recognition of their relationships in some legal manner. Then why do they insist they want "marriage"? In Australia they have full recognition of their perverted partnerships, but they *still* want to play at husband and wife.

Well, two people love each other and want to make that statement before their version of God and man… and don’t like being told they can’t. And as far as perversion, that is in your opinion. But, I can’t blame you. Animals, like Cats, smell the genetics that are "different" in their babies, and if too different, -eat- them at birth… You are like those animals, a long time ago such hatred served a purpose for the race, I am sure. However, we are no longer animals.

That, I suspect, is what they don’t want, as it often reverts back to the breeding portion of the family. You don’t need to turn "marriage" in a circus to do that.

It is only a circus because you are a homophobe.

I dont, despite the faults of gay couples and the kind of behavior and problems that can occur in a heterosexual marriage, the Wast family of England being one horror story one thinks of. I do not think that gay partners have a marriage. They have a partnership, a deep and caring partnership, but not the same as marriage? . – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have seen conclusive work on Brain differences, but it remained a "chicken or egg" argument…. it may well be hormonal, which may even be environmentally related, we aren’t sure. Gay marriage reduces promiscuity, thus transmission of STD’s are inhibited… In addition, Marriage forces one to develop a deeper sense of relationship…. and work on things, rather than turn and run.

I feel you are drawing a very long straw there, I think the fears of homophiles is to do with the small difference between gay and heterosexual preferences. And the mere fear that they might be gay is what raiese their hackles, and well they might be closet, not even able to amit to themselves that they have gay inclinations? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – or that can analyse environment in such a way as to reliably predict homosexual orientation.

You are letting the common discriminatory stance, probably connected to survival show. I think all these aflictions are mere survival traits? Diabetes for instance obviously a survival trait that shows up under certain condiions. And is advantageous under certain conditions? Unwanted and perhaps even detested under our normal conditions, but the implanted by nature/God the incredible variety of genetic branches to ensure survival of the species under the most varied conditions. If it’s environmental, perhaps people – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – can sue those responsible for (unwittingly) turning them gay. I know that’s not Bush’s position of course,

Of course you are fobbimg of here , Bushs position is quite clearly to pick up the christian vote, those lovely people who dont care who runs the world and how, as long as there is no abortion and no gay marriage. So you can back the Jewish protocols, instigate a Jewish inquisition in america and ensure a base in Israel, as long as you promise that back in hicksville where ever there will be no abortion and no gay marriage. You can kill 40000 people in Iraq, regular deaths of Americans in Iraq, Israel can run with it’s Nazi policies of genocide and torture to achieve it’s nefarious aims as long as there is no abortion and no gay marriage. They are so obssesed with pregnant young girls and what gays are up to that I will point out that was part of Hitlers popularity? So it is a fatal flaw in policy that tjis becomes an issue on deciding matters of far more concern to the voters like income, health, control of their own country so that they can expect and receive a fair share of the national cake. And properly evaluate governments that are not working for the best interest of all Americans? but that doesn’t mean Kerry is right either. I think it speaks volumes about the US polity that even on this matter, neither side is willing to unconditionally endorse the full sexual rights of gay people, and those that wink at them have to find an entirely spurious basis for doing so.

And even more so in the case of Bush who blatantly and unashamedly is playing this card so that indeed Kerry has to saddle himself not only wth a badly organised and entered into war, a rift wih our usual partners and the UN, but a divisive policy of pandering the religious right as well. Which does not give him much more room than Bush, so in comparison it boils down on everything else being equal, who reveres the traditional values of the US enough to protect them while dealing with a Bush self … read more »

And although I agree that it is not a marriage because children will not occur. So in relationships between men & women where 1 of them has a problem so that they cannot birth children. They shouldnt’ be allowed to get married eithert?

I’ve asked that myself. I’m personally aware of one couple who simply cannot procreate. His problem, her problem? I don’t know. But as long as they’re together, they will never have children. They’ve been married for over 20 years. Is this marriage not valid?

Probably not? I mean in reading back the oldies used to say if you married for children you were a peasant type, so sophiscated city slicker if you married without the intention of children? The difference is if a country who did not manufacture cars claimed to want to join countries who did produce cars by manufacture as the same they would be told, you are not the same, you buy a lot of cars, you repair a lot of cars, but you do not manufacture cars. So although you might be accepted in all ways by these other countries, there is one respect where you are not the same, you do not manufacture cars? In heterosexual marriage the problem is the same? Although you have the means to manufacture or produce a baby, you do not, and if you buy one it is still not fully manufactured by the couple as with the heterosexual couple? So to say that buying a full or half baby belittles the act of motherhood? A young couple struggles to achieve a position in life to have a baby, go through all th terrore and tribulations of miscarriage, troublesome births, and financial hardship to produce, and you want to say that a couple who could choose when and where they have the baby, in eddect buy a model without any of the trauma or effort that a heterosexual couple has to go through? Not to menton reaching stages where they wonder if it’s safe to hang his trousers on theend of the bed in case she should have an unwanted pregnancy? And also all the complications to health that a women can have with childbirth. Yes I do not think it is the same in a lot of ways.

Blood pressure 130 /70 (and this ?) previously 180/25 i think BMI 29.5 (etc) Turns out the locum that took my fasting bloods forgot to do the cholestrel one so no result for trigs chol etc. I was given a Diabetic record card this time so i can track my stats she said she could not understand why i hadn’t had one before ( i have only been DXed for the last three years.) Dohh As mentioned in a previous post i have MRSA (three years now) Well i have been offered a chance to discuss using a regime to eradicate it using methods that involve strict hygiene in the home i.e washing bed linen daily etc and using betnovate body rubs i have an appointment next week for this It has apparently been bought in, in an effort to get people MRSA free before they go into hospital for operations. As currently there are too many people turning for ops who already have MRSA ( free gift last time they were hospitalised no doubt.) Which brings me on to my dreaded Foot Fungi As mentioned by Tiger Lily, to name but one , it seems that the spraying of shoes and disinfection of socks is high on the agenda to effect a cure on this . I asked the nurse about this she said she had never heard of anyone having to disinfect socks and spray shoes etc etc,,,, then ensues a three day battle to obtain the opinion of a diabetic chiropodist about the laundry side of things the upshot of all this is that no one can seem to get hold of one of these rare and elusive creatures so i have now been given her phone number in the hope that i can succeed where co workers in the health proffession have not.
10:54:23 Sun, 10 Oct 2004alt.support.diabetes.uk I asked the nurse about this she said she had never heard of anyone having to disinfect socks and spray shoes etc etc,,,, then ensues a three day battle to obtain the opinion of a diabetic chiropodist about the laundry side of things Take a peek at any athlete’s foot preparation in the chemist… general disinfection is mentioned or at least implied in the instructions and is totally necessary. For example, with the Scholl cream, they say you should use the powder too on your socks.

Well it appears that she is right and you lot are all wrong <G Went to see the diabetic chiropodist today she said that as long as i put my trainers through the washing machine and the same with my socks, given current meds for six weeks it will clear up in eight weeks. Also Must avoid man made fibres in my socks. Only cotton and wool. new trainers or walking shoes would be a big advantage but in her opinion that will do the trick. I think someone is sitting on a fence here. Lets face it if the doc says i need sprays for my shoes etc maybe they are worried i will ask for them on prescription… I am honestly convinced that the advice on disinfecting socks and spraying shoes is the right way to go but it was nice to observe the opinion of a podiatrist. Thanks to you all thus far Lets face what do they know really!. — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).

Don’t know – is that the American system, or should it be 8.8? 8.8 isn’t great. Blood pressure 130 /70 (and this ?)

I’d be happy to have mine thereabouts. previously 180/25 i think BMI 29.5 (etc)

Overweight, but not obese. BMI should be between 20 and 25, I think. Turns out the locum that took my fasting bloods forgot to do the cholestrel one so no result for trigs chol etc. I was given a Diabetic record card this time so i can track my stats she said she could not understand why i hadn’t had one before ( i have only been DXed for the last three years.) Dohh

Never heard of one of these, but my dx was only a year ago. Why not use the Health software that you can download free from Ratty’s website http://www.flyingrat.net/ Go to the "Diabetes" section, then "Databases". As mentioned in a previous post i have MRSA (three years now) Well i have been offered a chance to discuss using a regime to eradicate it using methods that involve strict hygiene in the home i.e washing bed linen daily etc and using betnovate body rubs i have an appointment next week for this

If you do get into washing the bed linen daily [and I would assume towels and such as well], it might be worth seeing if there’s a professional laundry in your area – the sort that takes in the stuff, washes, dries, and folds. There aren’t that many of them around anymore, and it might be a pricey option, but it would be a lot easier [and less stressful] than dealing with that much washing yourself. Did they say how long this regime would last? Or is it open-ended? It has apparently been bought in, in an effort to get people MRSA free before they go into hospital for operations.

Since fungi reproduce by releasing spores, which then "hatch" [or whatever it is that spores do], making more fungi, I would think disinfection would be pretty important. A quick google found this diagrammatic of the life cycle of a particular type of fungus http://www.uark.edu/misc/aphid/lifecycle/life.html I think all fungi work in pretty much the same way.
Yeah, we should try it occasionally. If I were you, I think I would write a letter to the practice manager, detailing what’s happened. That’s really too many cock-ups in one go. Maggie

Ah lovely, nothing better for a diabetic support group than somoene randomly dispensing threats. I particularly enjoy the bit about the law. Which law? Of which country? Which is applicable in which circumstance? You may have accidenally tripped over something which could be interesting. Of course this is the wrong group for it, so it would be an OT discussion. And we should not attack each other – if we are truthful. Sound advice can be confirmed. What is erroneous is heresay and emotionality. Never mistake opinion for fact. Many here make political comment. May I suggest you transfer that energy to your political representatives and ensure funding is given to diabetic research for a cure.
Response:

FYI diabetes is a disease Actually, I don’t think of it as a disease. That’s more something you can catch. Diabetes is a problem that part of MY BODY has. I’m not angry with it, rather I feel a bit sorry for it. I’m trying to support it as best I can for the greater good (of the whole me). — Bob Dx T1 4/4/2003, just a few units of novorapid when I need it (trying zeroish carb – kiddies, do not try this at home)

It was the stupid remark about the curse I was getting at. If I caught AIDS or developed cancer or any of a load of really disabling/fatal conditions then I *might* think I had bean cursed. To think of diabetes as a curse shows an ignorance of the term and a bit too much self pity for me to stomach. I seem to remember a group of medics at some worldly gathering about a year or two back declared in there wisdom it was to be henceforth called a disease because previous to then they could not make their minds up if it was a condition, disability or a disease. I have always thought of it as a bloody nuisance. DaveT

Naturally I do not respect what you may respect. I cannot tolerate weakness. There are two types of doctors: 1) Those that pander and lie. Then tear their hair out at the stupidity and ignorance of those that attend their appointments. And they return and return. 2) Those that regard you as something of a rabbit. This will apply to many. Stop being a fool. If you wish to argue do so with those that consider you as foolish. I note the childish bravado. Educate your brain. Try and be a man. –

Hi Dave For a diabetic to be against stem cell research is akin to those religious groups who let their people die for want of a blood transfusion. The belief may be sincere, but there is a high price to pay. For a diabetic with cancer to be opposed would be taking it to extremes. I don’t believe in extremes.
I never said that collodial silver will cure your ailment. I will say the following. As an antibiotic, Silver kills over 650 disease causing organisms; resistant strains fail to develop. Silver is absolutely nontoxic. Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have. Doctors are reporting that, taken internally, it works against syphilis, cholera, malaria, diabetes and severe burns. (Bio/Tech News, 1995) If It’s good against strep A. Will it work for any other pathogen? Look it up or try it. I saw a list somewhere of all 650 of them. I reccomend collodial silver for anyone with a possible infection. Chronic fatigue , etc., etc If you do try this, make sure to eat "active culture" yogurt or take a supplement. Supplents should already be on your list. good luck. God bless.

MHD I am sorry for upsetting your group but I still feel Charles is not the Christian he said he was and he is my only enemy and no one else is. Charles you are a hypocrite and you know it. You only care about your own beliefs and ideas. I am glad you were not my daughters Sunday School teacher because I reared her not to be a bigot like people like you. I pity you Charles, with your health conditions you told me you have you should walk the narrow path better than you are. I don’t apologize for anything said to you but to the rest of MHD I won’t bother your group again.

This isn’t CHARLES group, but if you feel that you no longer wish to participate, then that’s Ok. I thought I might learn something here but I am done with newsgroups.

Would this be because you didn’t get the full support of the masses I wonder? If so, then I’d say you’re right and that newsgroups aren’t for you. I wanted to make friends but I found out the internet is not the place.

It was for a lot of us. Thanks to the ones who have supported me. Yes Ted you are a very sweet person to me and I love you for that. You hang in there Ted and things will get better.

I thought I might learn something here but I am done with newsgroups. I wanted to make friends but I found out the internet is not the place. Thanks to the ones who have supported me. Yes Ted you are a very sweet person to me and I love you for that. You hang in there Ted and things will get better. Diana — May You Live Today By How You Want To Be Remembered Tomorrow

This group was initiated to inform people about diabetes. At that time I was suffering and did not know squat about my problem. When I found MHD it was like it was getting daylight. It was formed by some very special people. A few are still around still helping. When we get too far off on a tangent we must try to remember why we are here. Technical words are to define, not to impress. Using them to snow a diabetic is improper. They are used for selling to fool the syckers. They have a place, if used at the proper place and in the proper setting. . When I see a person come here confused and very distressed, then flower nto a wonderful poster with positive contributions, I feel great Guy.

Response:

A few weeks back I was at a health food se and the owner was talking to me about restreing my eyesight with some herb or other. Her intent wasn’t exactly to sell me something from her store, she was quite curious, and as we talked, I discovered she didn’t know squat about retinopathy. She was not like some of the spammers we get here, but was trying to understand and help me. It escalated in to an argument. A rather strong one, as she was convinced she would be able to regrow the part of my retina that is damaged, and prevent further bleeding in my eyes. Partly because of this group, i uave gotten enough knowledge about the cause and effect of this eye disease and m opthal assured me that once the retina detaches, that’s it … game over. This lady would not let it go, and shewas following me around the store, and was absolutely convinced, maybe due to her training as an herbalist, and partly due to ignorance, that she really believed that she could restore my ruined sight. Now, I don;t know owyou feel about this, but wouldn’t you think that if this were possible, that some caring doc would gladly hand these things out. If it was so simple and all we had to do was to buy this herb to see, how many grateful people flock to that store to get treated. My God, the grateful hordes that would appear ! And how cruel is it to make this kind of claim, to a person already in trouble. Just like Jack with a hand full of magic beans, huh ? I was in the store buying something else, and here is this woman telling me she is capable of curing my problem, with a $10 bottle of an herb. When she wouldn’t let it go, I got angry and told her off. Told her how cruel it was to keep this ability she has to cure blindness. We will not be shopping in her store anymore. It’s closer to my house than the only other store, but I’ll be taking the bus to the other one now. Just like the vitamin store for body builders right by my house. One lady who works there is convinced that some preparation they sell will cure diabetes. The difference between this lady and the other, is that this lady is just a fast talking saleswoman. Shs no more believes this crap than flying to the moon, She is just looking for her commission. The unabashed cruelty of telling people that this or that preparation will fix or restore a medical problem, is so huge that it just boggles my mind. And people should really know better, that if any of this was real, we’d all be doing it, right ? In contrast, the other health food place i go to, does not promote anything they sell as a cure. They mainly have real food stuffs and prepackagd healthy snacks and supplements. They do have the usual number of remedies and packaged herbs and so forth, but these guys never push it. They’ll fix you up with a wheatgrass drink at the juice bar ( very poplar there ), but they don’t pretend to be God. Anyone who reads this group on a continuing basis, know bett. I think we all have a responsibility to continue to make sure others don’t get scammed by people who only want money. I. for one, know the desperation of finding a way to deal with my diminishing sight, and eating some pill that might not even really be a certain herb or anything other than a placebo, might be attractive in a desperate moment. But we know these things won;t work. Some people will try the latest "witch doctor". I have a really good idea, ( she said sarcastically ) it might be unique to some. Invest all your time and money in to good education, a gym membership and the best food and med you can. Find an acceptable doc. Most people want a quick fix and there isn’t one. And some people want to believe all that mumbo gumbo the spammer scammers blab. I personally wouldn’t give any creedence to anyone telling me that some magic pill will care anything. At least I know I a not going to hell with a pocket full of money I stole from hopeful desperate folks ! Rainbow

However, my reply should indicate that it is not and that the contents of the website, that I am so excited about, is genuine. This is a multi-partner project, the website was put together with input from individuals of many different organizations (click on "meet the team" to see who). Never heard of Lakehead University? Check out Lakehead’s website www.lakeheadu.ca

OK. Would I find there evidence of your connection with the University? Finally, nowhere on the www.successfulaging.ca website are we or will we ask for money.
OK, Peter, thanks for your name. But really, if your project were a scientific one, I’d be looking for details of your department, supervisor’s name, aim of research, and so forth, simply as a token of good faith. And phrases like "Want to feal healthier?" and "I am so excited about it" and "we are a multi-partnered project" don’t exactly suggest scientific motivation. — Alan Mackenzie (Munich, Germany) (like "aa"), remove half of them (leaving, say, "a").

The project and its connection with Lakehead U. seem legit. The project is partly funded by Manulife Financial- an insurance company with a special interest in keeping the Canadian population healthy. Perhaps Peter has a relationship with Manulife? That might explain his excitement. It’s no excuse to spam the newsgroups with cross-posts though.

Also. cross-posting is vastly, vastly preferable to sending the same thing individually to all the different groups and making people who happen to follow different groups read it again, and again, and again. But failing to correctly set a "Followup-To:" is grounds for flensing him with wet spaghetti. And again, it really smells like a miracle-cure-spam-scam from the format and style. It may even be in use to gather addresses to spam people, which seems a common use for semi-vaguely-legitimate website forms these days.

Can you grab his advisor’s name, or the department at Lakehead U.? Most universities forbid any form of spam, and their personnel department/IT department/deans would be pretty angry about this sort of behavior.

When I see the word "free" or "cure" I do not read those posts. Diabetes is not a trivial matter to us.
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’ve got a theory and was wondering if it’s true or if anyone else has thought about this before. You may rememember a few weeks ago, I said I noticed that I could eat many more carbs, since I started exercising — and still stay in ketosis. Well, here’s my theory…. Assuming: -My treadmill says I just burned 200 calories. -Carbs are used as fuel before anything else (except alcohol — but I had no alcohol.) -1 gram of carbs works out to 4 calories. -I just ate something with about 50 grams of carbs in it Then: Did I just burn ALL (50×4=200) of those carbs off? Is there something wrong in my logic? Is that not the way the body works? If this is true, then could I eat somthing with 100 grams of carbs and then work out and burn 400 calories and be done with it. I should do some experimenting… or has anyone else experimented with this? JM 231/194/204 (10lbs to go) Atkins since 22 May ‘03

I personally do not believe that carbs are immediately burnt. I think there may be a variety of uses for them, such as brain food, replacing glycogen, etc. Certainly burning all of them is possible. But, if this is true, why do I get a lift of mental energy when I take in some carbs during a bike ride? I don’t believe that I get that much of a physical impact, but there’s really no way for me to test this. I do feel better, which could be psychological. Plus, it depends on when the carbs go into your system — better is while exercising or before (in terms of being burnt). —

Response:

Nothing wrong here. Calories are calories are calories. No magic or physics. Low carb, and carbs are sugars pure and simple, the fewer carbs you eat the fewer cals you will consume. Fat and protein make you less likely to binge or go crazy. Exercise is the key to ongoing weight loss and maintenance. I went from 158.5 to 131.5. Need to gain 3.5 pounds, and am pretty close. Here are my guidelines: -Fatty foods will increase your LDL – Calories count. Want to lose weight? Watch you cals. But carbos make you hungry, so watch you carbo intake. Less food = fewer cals. – replace your bad carbs with good ones. White bread to stone ground bread, white rice to brown rice, pasta to whole wheat pasta (and not the blends). -look to lose 1.5 to lbs/week. With diet and exercise you can do this. Now back to exercise, it is the key.. Rich

Exercise is the key to ongoing weight loss and maintenance.

The key to weight loss and maintenance is reduced consumption. Period.

Response:

Consider that carbs won’t immediately put you out of ketosis. You need to add about 100g of carbs to your liver glycogen store to drop out of ketosis, but at the same time you’re replenishing muscle glycogen (exercise may deplete muscle glycogen, giving you a larger "carb sink" on average), powering ongoing activity, etc etc. It’s not just a simple "eat carbs, drop out of ketosis." So, while exercise may use up carbs (it depends on the exercise – light enough exercise may only burn fat), it also sets up your body to be able to absorb more carbs later. Additionally, routine exercise may increase your base metabolism, allowing other parts of your body to burn carbs faster too.

I don’t think that is exactly right. They will be burned as fuel first, if there is a demand for them. I think what happens (for a person who exercises a lot) is that the capacity for storing glycogen is active. Everytimne you exercise hard, you burn out your glycogen. When you eat carbs right after exercising hard, or during, or perhaps even before, the carbs are used to refill the glycogen in your muscles. That glycogen won’t be burned first unless you put a load on the system, ie hard exercise. Otherwise, the body happily continues to get energy direct from food in the system or from fat, because you aren’t demanding a lot. -1 gram of carbs works out to 4 calories. -I just ate something with about 50 grams of carbs in it Then: Did I just burn ALL (50×4=200) of those carbs off?
Jim, The calorie counts on the machines bear no relation to reality. I’ve found this to be true for myself when logging food and exercise very closely and have read the same thing in several books including Dr. Bernstein’s latest "Diabetes Solution." You’ll have to log what you eat and how much exercise you do (and what the machine says) for a fw months to determine how the calorie counts on the machines match up with how your weight loss proceeds. For me the reality of calories burned is about half what the machine shows, if that. — Jenny 168.5/137 Low Carb 9/1998 – 8/2001 and 11/10/02 – Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW!
